When the World Cups approach, all nations go beyond their powers to be a suitable candidate to host them. In 2018, Russia also took some unbelievable and, to some point, funny steps to ensure that they are the best host. Some countries go to all extents to ensure that their establishments are suitable for the regulations, which state that the venue should host a minimum of 35,000 spectators. Well, Ekaterinburg Arena could only have 25,000 at the time, so the owners decided to create this funny addition to the initial venue, protruding from one side.

The Rayo Vallecano Stadium

Rayo Vallecano is a Madrid institution that might not be among the best in the capital, but they remained one of the first in the Spanish League. One peculiar aspect is that it seems unfinished since it has one end without any stands. There is only one wall, and you can easily see the buildings in the city as though the stadium was built overnight and still needs finishing. Apart from the aesthetics, this also proved to be very dangerous. During the 2018-2019 season, a child fell down due to the poorly developed structure. Fortunately, he was not hurt, but they had to close the stadium to make “improvements for security reasons”.

South African Style in Spain

This might seem like the biggest waste of all time. Most of the stadiums that were built in 2010 would make the economists utterly desperate. Huge venues costing millions of dollars were built only for a few matches, but their construction was simply abandoned afterward. A project in Spain was supposed to host up to 60,000 spectators, and the work started in 2007. However, no one finished the building. Similarly, La Cartuja de Sevilla was built for the 1999 World Athletics World Cup, but it was never used since then. Such a waste of finances!

Balaidos

If you believe in curses, keep reading. This stadium seems absolutely unbelievable. Balaidos went through so many unfortunate events that many people nowadays have no idea what to do with it. In 2017, a match against Real Madrid was planned in the venue, but it ended up being postponed. A few hours before the match, an iron plate from the ceiling fell on the stands. Fortunately, the venue was empty at the time of the collapse.

In Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, two rivals have their stadiums within a few meters. Other teams that inaugurated more stadiums are Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico de Madrid. However, the new venues are not always what the fans need or want. In fact, the Gran Canaria Stadium does not even have much accessibility or a good spot because of the vast distance from the stands. In some cases, even too many stadiums are too many.

Sharing Seats?

The regulations that stadiums now have are in place in order to protect both the players and the audience. The history of FIFA was not always undisturbed, such as the Heysel Tragedy back in 1985. At one particular match, the excited Liverpool supporters overfilled the stands well beyond the safe limit. This caused them to fall in an avalanche, breaking the walls and the stands. The sad event led to 39 deaths and more than 600 injured people.

We all know the legend of David Beckham and his undisputable skills. What others might or might not know is that he always wanted to launch a new stadium, but his problems seem to have no limit. Initially, the people living in the area did not agree with the new building because of the many inconveniences it would cause to them. After he managed to sort this one out, along came another one: the land on which the construction was supposed to be built was found to be contaminated with high levels of barium and arsenic.

The Celta de Vigo stadium was renovated with the purpose of enhancing the experience. However, football supporters did not hesitate to throw their anger at the leadership, which certainly did not think it through. The space between the rows is so limited that no one could sit comfortably, ending up with the knees against the seat in front of them. Many photos followed, showing fans’ discontent at the disaster, wondering which architect agreed with these renovations. The club blamed the Council of Vigo for following up with the construction.
