Shea butter is fat, which is derived from the nuts of a shea tree. It is an off-white or ivory color and has a creamy texture that is easy to spread on your skin. Most shea butter originates from West African shea trees.

High fatty acid and vitamin concentrations make shea butter an excellent cosmetic treatment for skin softening. Shea butter has anti-inflammatory and therapeutic effects, too. Using it on your body, particularly the face, will make your skin clear, toned, and relieved.

The simplest way of using shea butter for your face is to buy a cream from a health food store, pharmacy, or online retailerç You can also make it at home. Read on to find out how to make a simple, two-ingredient facial moisturizer with shea buttercream.

Shea Butter Cream Facial Moisturizer

Kristin Marr has formulated this simple two-ingredient cream facial moisturizer shea butter recipe. Upon washing the skin, you can use this as a day or night facial cream. A four-ounce serving requires one hour of preparation time and five minutes of making time.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shea butter, unrefined or refined (40g)
  • 1/8 cup Clear Complex Carrier Oil Blend or a favorite nourishing oil of choice, such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, or avocado oil (23g)

Instructions

  1. Put a glass bowl above a saucepan that is partially filled with water over medium heat. Place the shea butter in the glass bowl, and let it melt completely.
  2. Remove the bowl (and shea butter) from the source of heat carefully. Add the oil, and mix the ingredients together by stirring. Pour the mixture into a storage container with a cap or cover (you probably don’t need a cap yet).
  3. The oil mixture should be cooler at this time (along with the jar). If not, then let it rest for several minutes. Then put the mixture in the refrigerator and leave it to solidify (1-2 hours, depending on location in the fridge and temperature of the refrigerator).
  4. When the mixture is creamy and thick (it should be more solid, not hard), remove the jar from the fridge. Stir.
  5. Put the lid on top of the container, and keep it at room temperature (out of the sun). This mixture should last about half a year unless bacteria are introduced through dirty hands into the mixture.

How to Use

This moisturizer serves as a cream for day or night. Wash your face as you want. You may use a toner and face wash.

Then add a small amount of moisturizer to the tips of your fingers. Massage the moisturizer cream on the face. A bit of moisturizer will go a long way.

The mixture will take some time to penetrate fully into the flesh.

Side Effects and Risk

Shea butter is a topical product that is extremely low-risk in terms of application. Shea-butter allergic reactions are rare.

Even people allergic to tree nuts, the family of which shea nuts belong, present a small risk of reaction of shea butter on their face.

Researchers assume this is because shea nuts contain little of allergy-triggering tree-nut proteins. Yet this does not mean that there are no drawbacks to using it. This is likely to be because of the comedogenic consistency of shea butter.

Bottom Line

Shea butter is a popular skin moisturizer. There are plenty of skincare items that use shea butter as one of the key ingredients at a range of price points.

At home, you can try this do-it-yourself shea butter moisturizer recipe. You can enjoy its relaxing and anti-aging properties that can make your skin look smoother and reduce aging.
